Carlee Leifkes and Lucas Unger aren’t exactly a traditional couple. In fact, they pride themselves on being as non-traditional as possible. So when the pair got engaged on Halloween night in California, it was inevitable that Unger would get down on one knee with a wonderfully weird ring in hand – but you’ll never guess just what the couple had in mind for their special moment…
First, some background info. Carlee and Lucas met at a music festival in Canada (where Lucas is from), and started a whirlwind romance. Lucas moved to California to be with his new love. The pair are both fans of crazy hair colours, piercings, and just about anything alternative. So naturally when they began discussing marriage, the idea of a classic diamond engagement ring was immediately shunned by both of them.
Instead, they came up with something a little more unorthodox – one of Lucas’ wisdom teeth! His father had kept his pearly whites after he had them removed, and mailed the best one to the couple. Lucas took it to Bridwell Jewellers in Los Angeles to have a custom made ring created from the tooth. Although Carlee knew about the ‘tooth ring’, the design was kept strictly secret and she was forbidden from seeing it until Lucas popped the question in front of family and friends at a party.
We have to admit, the final product is oddly beautiful. It’s held in place with four prongs and a thick band with high impact metalwork, featuring hearts with a Celitc-inspired spiral twist. Lucas also got a ring made for himself, but in the absence of one of Carlee’s wisdom teeth he opted for an engraving of a tooth surrounded by the words ‘Do you really wanna hold my dirty hands’ – lyrics from the song that was playing when the couple first met.
On the symbolic meaning of the ring, Carlee said ‘The tooth symbolises the weird, quirky, odd couple we are. Every tooth is different, and the tooth also shows what my husband is willing to go through for me. Lucas literally grew this and went through pain when he got it removed, and all of that went into my wedding ring.’
The quirkiness doesn’t stop there either; the happy couple are set to wed in Vegas in a few weeks time, with Carlee wearing a pink dress (and, unfortunately, a broken leg in a cast) and Elvis officiating the ceremony.
Congrats, guys!
